The human body needs the nutrients found in food to help keep ot functioning properly. Each nutrient does a different job within the body.
Nutrients Fat- the body needs fat to help provide energy and keep us warm. The type of fat we eat can affect the body in different ways. Saturated fat that we get from animals can block the arteries and cause heart disease. Unstaurated fats from plants such as olive oil are not as harmful Sources- full-fat milk, butter, cheese, margarine, olive oil
Protein- the body needs for growth and repair, e.g if you fall and cut yourself, protein helps you heal causing the scab to repair itself. Sources- meat, fish, eggs, soya, quorn,nuts
Carbohydrates- starches- the body needs starches to provide slow release energy and fill up when we are hungry. Sources- potatoes, pasta bread and rice
Carbohydrates- Sugars- we need for quick release energy. Excess sugar in the body will turn to fat and cause us to put weight on Sources- cakes, fizzy drinks and sweets
Vitamins- the body needs vitamins to help fight disease and illness
Vitamin A- needed for vision in dim light, for healthy skin Sources- carrots, fish , dairy foods Vitamin B groups needed for the release of energy and to help make red blood cells Sources- ceral, meat, eggs Vitamin C needed for healthy skin and the absorption of iron Sources- oranges, blackcurrants and kiwi Vitamin D needed for growth and maintenance of strong bones and teeth Sources- fish like tuna
