yamakasi-strong body,strong mind,strong spirit.
if you ask the french what freerunning is ? they will shrug there shoulders, but if you describe the moves and concepts of freerunning they will say "YAMAKASI"
yamakasi is the team that david belle and sebastian foucan trained with. david belle inspired by his fathers usefullness took some of the efficient moves and created the parkour ideals, sebastian came to england, made the jump programs where he doesnt mention parkour or yamakasi but did mention the word freerunning, which is now in common use.
most of what we know about parkour is from written interviews with david belle and a short 10 min vid .
anyone who has watched the 'generation yamakasi' one hour documentary will see that they have been doing their art long before the jump london/britain series with some footage of the yamakasi in 1990 showing how skilled disciplined and how many moves they allready possesed.
anyone who knows about 'parkour philosophy' has only to watch 'generation yamakasi' where they talk about being usefull and a helpfull member of society, as well as talking about exercises where they learnt to trust each other with there lives.
they chose the name yamakasi meaning 'strong body, strong mind, strong spirit, because they felt this describes best what they were trying to achieve.
you wont find no big sponsered yamakasi website with individual promotion and 'yamakasi'clothing range. but what you will find if you watch there documentary is a team who know what they are talking about and are a shining example of helping others, there work with children and work with prisoners to name a few.
