I was out training with jon, fern and David(formerly known as kingo) the other day when i was horrified to see David proudly performing the absolute no,no stretch of the fitness proffessional known as the hurdlers. It involves sitting on the floor with one leg straight and the other bent out sideways against the ground while leaning backwards. Even at the basic levels of fitness education it is known as a completely non productive stretch, up there with asking two sumo wrestlers to sit on your legs to help you achieve a full side split and tying your foot to a moving train in order to increase you leg extension, DO NOT DO IT!!! But it does'nt hurt when I do it, some of you may say, well thats even worse , because it should. The more it hurts the more your knee is not used to being unstable the less it hurts the weaker your knee is and that more prone to injury. The knees like the elbows are hinge joints and are perfectly designed for moving that way. The shoulders and the hip joints are ball and socket designed for a full range of motion. Use dynamic stretching and isometric to gain incredible flexibility without damaging your joints at all. They have been covered before and there are countless tutorials to search through on the net. Take it easy everyone and remember to love your ligaments.

Jay, I do that stretch all the time, I did not realise how unproductive it was. I am sorry David.
I know plenty of stretches, I just thought another wouldn't be bad to know, but it seems I was incorrect.

Don't worry Olly, loads of people do it, even at schools some dimwit PE teachers still do it. But yes, it is very unproductive and can only, i repeat only, cause injury. Its good that you've got plenty of other stretches to do. Just always make sure that they are in agreement with the basic movement of the joint in the first place.

As far as I know stretches will only be productive if you're putting tension on a muscle (and therefore lessening the effect of the stretch reflex); there's no muscle running down the side of your leg to bend the lower leg left and right, so it wouldn't really make sense as a stretch.
